Paleo, a happy insight

Cinzia Merli, Le Macchiole. www.caratello.ch

There is a winery in Bolgheri that has made its fundamental contribution to creating the myth of the area as we know it now.
We are talking about Le Macchiole and its Paleo Rosso.

You can’t refuse an invitation from Cinzia Merli, so some time ago we went to Al Ceppo restaurant in Rome for a vertical of the happy insight: Paleo.
But who is Cinzia Merli?
Banally one could answer: the owner of the company
Le Macchiole, is actually much more than that.
A visionary?
A detail-oriented person?
A shy person?
Well, perhaps all these things that well dosed have resulted in excellent products.

Le Macchiole was founded in the early 1980s and a very young Cinzia together with her husband Eugenio Campolmi had with Paleo a happy intuition with the nascent Bolgheri phenomenon very particular, leading them immediately to be absolute references in the territory.
Eugenio left us early, but Cinzia continued in the groove they had traced together, bringing her wines to be international references.

Wine image has always been the Paleo, a name for a wild herb from the Bolgheri area.
This wine began in 1989 as Cabernet Sauvignon with a small addition of Sangiovese.
In 1996 5% Cabernet Franc entered the blend, which in 1998 replaced Sangiovese and increased its presence until the turning point in 2001, when Paleo became
100% Cabernet Franc.
Anticipando di circa 20 anni la tendenza odierna che vede nascere Cabernet Franc in purezza in ogni dove.

Our vertical starts right from 2001.
The de gustatory notes can be found below, but a few key aspects emerged from the tasting.
Paleo over the years has evolved while maintaining an olfactory timbre that bears witness to a
mediterranean wine.
La trama gustativa è rimasta orientata a una
great elegance in all the vintages a sign that muscular wines at the winery have never liked (small exception for 2012).
Finally, it can be seen that.
great territories are expressed through certain grape varieties and not others even if they are more “traditional,” and this is the greatest legacy that the vision of Eugenio and Cinzia and their Paleo delivers to us.
