The Essential Guide to Italian Wine 2027 by DoctorWine

The Essential Guide to Italian Wine is the DoctorWine guide dedicated to the selection of the best Italian wineries.

This 2027 edition is the 13th of The Essential Guide to Italian Wine, which made its debut with the 2015 version. The guiding philosophy of this guide is being essential above all, which means not lumping together thousands of wineries but selecting those that for DoctorWine are the best and that in the coming months will offer the market very prestigious wines. Thus just the fact of just
being selected to be among the over 1,000 cited is an achievement in itself.

A total of 1,376 wineries were selected and 3,476 wines reviewed. Among these, 910 were singled out for their excellent quality/price ratio, those that retail for under 18 euros in the Italian market.

Our evaluation system is done on three levels. One looks at the estate/winery with a rating that goes from one to three stars and takes into account how emblematic they are of their territory, the consistency of quality and their international image.

Another focus on the quality of individual wines, and rated by the 100-point scale. Wines that have a rating of 95/100 receive a DoctorWine Seal, the ‘faccino’ (DoctorWine is Daniele Cernilli’s pseudonym and on the seal there is his face), in recognition of the very high quality of the wine in regard to the vintage present in this edition of the guide. Wines with a 98/100 rating receive a double ‘seal’ while a triple ‘seal’ is given to wine with a 99/100 or 100/100 rating.

The third evaluation is the one for a wine’s quality/price ratio, which is distinguished by the famous ‘thumbs up’ like symbol.
