From the automotive industry to biodynamics: Pasquale Forte has transformed 500 hectares in Val d’Orcia into an agricultural project based on quality, biodiversity, and innovation. Eighteen hectares of vineyards produce wines with great character, with the 2022 Guardiavigna taking center stage.
Reading the résumé of Pasquale Forte is truly astonishing. In 1972, at just 23 years old, he founded Eldor Corporation SpA, which today is a leading automotive company with approximately 3,000 employees. It is located in Orsenigo, in the province of Como, but has offices in 20 countries around the world, including the U.S. and China.
The Agricultural Dream in Val d’Orcia
But while this is extremely important for understanding who we’re dealing with, it has nothing to do with wine. What does have to do with it, however, is the Podere Forte, a sort of dream come true over the course of more than thirty years. It’s located in Castiglione d’Orcia, east of Montalcino and west of Pienza. It’s a spectacular farm, based on the principles of biodynamics. They produce wine, of course, but also extra-virgin olive oil, wheat, honey, pasta, and cured meats. Everything is organized to achieve the highest possible quality while strictly respecting biodiversity and environmental sustainability.
Eighteen hectares cultivated without compromise
The entire estate covers 500 hectares, but the vineyards occupy only 18 of them. What’s impressive is that Pasquale Forte makes all the decisions on his own. Over the years, he has become a farmer, winemaker, agricultural entrepreneur, and a highly refined viticulturist. He claims that in the vineyard he cultivates the vines as they did 2,000 years ago, while in the winery the techniques are cutting-edge.
From Sangiovese to Cabernet Franc
All of his wines are outstanding. From Guardiavigna—made from Cabernet Franc grown in the Orniello vineyard, just one hectare—to the Melo, an Orcia Sangiovese, to the Petrucci Anfiteatro. Finally, also made from Sangiovese and at more affordable prices, there are the Villaggio and the Petruccino, followed by the Corfiero, which is primarily a blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Franc. In addition, there is a Metodo Classico, the “Ada,” produced in just a few hundred bottles, also made from Sangiovese grapes, naturally vinified as white wine.
A world-class star
Needless to say, every wine, within its category, met with the utmost care from an oenological standpoint. The Guardavigna 2022, in particular, is a true world-class standout. It’s also a favorite of Aubert De Villaine, former president of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, a close friend of Pasquale Forte as well as a relentless taster. For our part, we can’t help but agree.
