Timorasso: one of Italy’s great native whites
Timorasso is a white grape variety historically grown in the Tortonese Hills, where its presence has been documented since the Middle Ages. The area is characterized by a hilly landscape full of ups and downs and clayey, compact soils composed of blue marls, similar to those found in other important wine-growing areas of Piedmont.
The rebirth of this grape variety is due to the efforts of a number of local vintners who, starting in the late 1980s, began an important work of recovery and enhancement. Among the protagonists of this rebirth are Walter Massa, Andrea Mutti and Paolo Poggio.
In recent years, the growth of Timorasso has been significant: while in 2009 the area planted with vines was only 25 hectares, by 2025 it exceeded 500 hectares, with a production of about 1.7 million bottles.
A wine increasingly appreciated abroad as well
The success of Derthona Timorasso does not only concern the Italian market. Today about half of the production is for export, with established markets such as the United States, Canada and Northern Europe, to which new destinations such as South Korea, Australia and Japan are being added.
In this context, Derthona Due.Zero represents a fundamental event for promoting the territory and telling the identity of this wine that is increasingly recognized internationally.
Not only wine: the gastronomic excellence of the Tortonese Hills
The event is part of the project “Piedmont’s Island of Whites: its supply chain,” which aims to enhance the area’s agricultural and food excellence through a short and integrated supply chain.
In fact, alongside the wines, numerous local products will also be featured, including:
- Noble Salami of Giarolo

-
strawberries and other local agricultural specialties
A basket that tells the gastronomic identity of the Tortonese Hills and strengthens the link between wine and territory.
