Alba – Wine Festival, Piedmont’s native grape varieties

May 24

Wine Festival, Piedmont’s native grape varieties: Meeting with producers, biodiversity, wine culture

Go Wine presents theeighth edition of the Wine Festival dedicated to the Autochthonous Grapes of Piedmont, scheduled for Sunday, May 24, 2026 in the historic center of Alba.

A tasting event that pays tribute to the great richness of the Piedmont vineyard: expressed through native grape varieties, narrated and offered for tasting in the direct presence of the producers.

The event will take place throughout the day, transforming Alba’s historic center into a large tasting trail dedicated to Piedmont’s viticultural biodiversity.

A “journey” through the Piedmont vineyard

The Wine Festival was created to highlight the richness and diversity of the region’s ampelographic heritage, giving voice to famous varieties and other rarer ones that have been recovered and revived in recent years.

More than 40 grape varieties will be represented during the day, in an ideal journey through the Piedmont of wine: from the best-known varieties, such as Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto,Arneis or Timorasso, to lesser-known and particularly fascinating varieties such as Baratuciat, Bian Ver, Uvalino, Becuet, Caricalasino, Chatus, white Rossese and many others.

An itinerary that invites you to discover not only the wines, but also the territories, the stories and the work of the wineries that guard and interpret this extraordinary heritage.

Wine as an encounter with wineries

Wineries participate in the event by meeting directly with the public at tasting booths that will enliven the city’s historic center.

Other grape varieties and wines will be presented in special thematic wine shops, thus completing the tasting tour.

The Wine Festival is also an opportunity to experience wine as encounter, dialogue and storytelling: an opportunity to get to know the producers up close, listen to the stories of the wineries and delve into the link between grape variety, landscape and territorial identity.

Special guests: Wines of Portugal and Vermentino in Italy

In the sign of encounter and comparison, two thematic wine shops will tell about a great native grape variety of Italy and a foreign reality.

In Italy, the choice fell on Vermentino: a grape variety that we can call “Tyrrhenian,” because it looks to the sea and is exalted in certain soils (such as the granite of Gallura in Sardinia).

Ninety percent of the vermentino in Italy comes from Liguria, Tuscany and Sardinia, with some occurrences also in Umbria and Latium.

A selection of labels will tell the story of its presence in different regions and give voice to important performers.

Portugal is the host country for this edition: boasting an ancient history, it is the 11th largest wine producer in the world; regions such as Douro and Port make up 20 percent of the total national production.

A selection of wines will tell the story of the country’s main wine-growing areas: from northern Vinho Verde to southern Alentejo, the largest wine region.

There are over 250 indigenous wines from Portugal: we will present some of them in an exclusive Enoteca.

Three masterclasses to deepen knowledge

A number of masterclasses will characterize the day and touch on different themes: celebrating the 60th anniversary of the recognition of the first docs in Italy, focusing on the Wines of Portugal, hosts of the event.

The masterclass program

  • 11:30 a.m.: 60 Years of DOC in Italy (1966-2026): Barolo, Barbaresco & more… Inaugural event, tasting of 6 wines (Barolo, Barbaresco, Brunello di Montalcino, Vernaccia di San Gimignano, Frascati, Ischia)

60 years of Doc to be celebrated with an exclusive lounge of

Barolo, Barbaresco and other great Italian wines

A masterclass (11:30 a.m. booking by clicking at the bottom of the page), aims to celebrate an important anniversary: 60 years in 2026 since the establishment of the first DOCs. Where Barolo and Barbaresco, the great reds of Langa, and other important Italian wines stand out.

In the afternoon, a lounge area will present a selection of all the appellations that were the first in Italy to obtain designation of origin recognition.

Alba, city of wine

The choice of Alba as the venue for the event is not accidental.

The city has always been a point of reference for the world of wine, for the presence of important educational and cultural institutions, for its role in the heart of an area of excellence and for its ability to welcome and narrate wine in all its expressions.

For one day, the historic center of Alba becomes a wine street, a place where different grape varieties, territories and histories of Piedmont converge, in a celebration that combines tasting, knowledge and conviviality.

As in every edition, Go Wine will also promote an initiative to benefit wine research.
