Sixty years of the Bianco di Pitigliano DOC – A millennial heritage looking to the future: June 20 conference between history, research and future prospects

The celebrates 60 years of the Bianco di Pitigliano DOC with an important event dedicated to the history, research and future prospects of local viticulture.

The event, titled 60 Years of the Bianco di Pitigliano DOC – A thousand-year heritage looking to the future,” will be held on Saturday , June 20 at 11 a.m. at the premises of the Cantina Cooperativa di Pitigliano. It will see the participation of authoritative representatives from the academic, institutional and wine-making worlds.

Opening the proceedings will be institutional greetings by Pitigliano Mayor Giovanni Gentili and President of the Cantina di Pitigliano Paolo Spicci. The conference will be moderated by journalist Paolo Mastracca. It will then offer a moment of insight into the historical, cultural and productive value of a denomination that represents one of the most significant expressions of Tuscan enology.

Speakers will include:

  • Mario Fregoni, Professor Emeritus of the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Milan, Piacenza branch, and member of the Academy of Vine and Wine;
  • Claudio D’Onofrio, Professor University of Pisa; and member of the Academy of Vine and Wine;
  • Paolo Storchi, director of CREA in Arezzo and member of the Academy of Vine and Wine;
  • Sandro Conticelli, University of Florence;
  • Ines Tescione, Ministry of Environment and Energy Securitya official;
  • Angelo Biondi, Professor and land historian;
  • Giancarlo Spezia, Engineer

The conclusions will be entrusted to Edoardo Ventimiglia, vice president of the Consortium, who will offer a historical excursus on the evolution of the Consortium and the appellation. Instead, Stefano Formiconi, president of the Consorzio di Tutela Bianco di Pitigliano e Sovana DOC, will focus on the current state and prospects of local viticulture.

The initiative is intended to be not only a celebration of an important anniversary, but also an opportunity to discuss the challenges facing the wine sector, including sustainability, climate change, enhancement of quality production and promotion of the territory.

The day will then continue at 6 p.m. in Piazza della Fortezza Orsini, where “Pitigliano DOC” will take place, an event dedicated to tastings of the area’s wines by the Cantine nel Tufo Association, thus offering the public an opportunity to learn about and savor the different interpretations of a winemaking tradition rooted in the thousand-year history of Pitigliano and the City of Tuff.
