Mare e Vitovska in Morje 2025

June 25 - June 28

Mare e Vitovska is the annual rendezvous with the most famous indigenous grape variety of the Trieste, Gorizia and Slovenian Karst, organized by the Association of Karst-Kras Winegrowers in the picturesque location of Duino Castle.

The vitovska

Vitovska is a unique grape variety that speaks of the Karst, a borderland of rock and sea. It grows in that small corner of territory behind Trieste, stretching eastward toward the Breg, a small valley eroded and created over millennia by the Rosandra stream, and westward toward the Italian and Slovenian Karst. Vitovska gives wines that transparently tell the authentic character of these fascinating lands, rich in history and tradition.

Vitovska is a white grape variety that has always been grown in the province of Trieste and in areas of neighboring Slovenia. The origin of the name is still uncertain, but the grape variety is probably of Slovenian origin. Some say it derives from the Slovenian word vitica (grape vine).

Unlike other varieties whose ancient or recent origins are known, Vitovska can be considered a native variety; in fact, there is no trace of other varieties with which it can be identified in other regions of the Mediterranean, and its history has been lost in the folds of centuries of local tradition, reaching, through a long process of adaptation and selection, the current characteristics that allow it to give results in the red lands of the Karst where it is able to withstand, whipped by the Bora, the cold winters and the drought of the hot season.

The event

Mare e Vitovska is the annual rendezvous with Karst’s most famous native grape variety.

Tastings with food pairings by restaurateurs from the province of Trieste and beyond; a guided tasting by the AIS of Trieste, a conference with the theme “Vitovska, wine of the Karst, an expression of its territory and those who grow it. Resistant to the trends of fickle viticultural fashion. What future has viticulture linked to native wines and its terroir?”

Corner shops with typical Karst products such as wines, cheeses, cured meats, sweets, honey and extra virgin olive oil will be set up.

The 2025 edition of Mare e Vitovska in Morje will be held June 25-28 in the picturesque setting of Duino Castle in Trieste. The event was born out of a desire to promote and publicize local food and wine excellence. The event will be attended by producers from the Trieste Karst and those from the Slovenian Karst, as well as some guest winemakers from other regions of Italy.

Completing the program: a gastronomic offer of the area paired with extreme care with the wines being tasted, a conference, a walk among the vineyards, all in a cosmopolitan and international setting, symbolized by the enchanting panorama overlooking the sea with views of Slovenia, Croatia and the first Julian Alps.
