Pecorino, for those who like intense aromas and a strong taste

Pecorino per tutte le tasche

We dedicate today’s installment of this column of wines for every pockets to Pecorino wine. Its characteristics are able to please many palates.

Let’s go back to talking about Pecorino (obviously the wine, not the cheese) since this wine is liked and, fortunately, can be drunk “without melting the credit card” (just to quote director Cernilli). It is therefore a type of wine that is perfectly suited to this our Tuesday column devoted to wines for all pockets, that is, that can be found for sale, in wine shops or online shops, at a maximum of 15 euros.

Its characteristic feature is that it combines a fairly intense and sharp olfactory spectrum of aromatic herbs, white fruit and white flowers with a mouthfeel of beautiful structure but good acidity, which makes it very enjoyable and capable of a certain longevity. Precisely because of these organoleptic characteristics, it is very eclectic at the table: suits fish crudités and fish in general, as well as first courses with white sauce and white meats. It can also accompany mild and medium-aged cheeses, just like a young pecorino.

Today we bring you one from the Marche region, and to be exact from Piceno, which can be considered the home of modern Pecorino, and one from Abruzzo, another land of choice for this grape variety.

Velenosi, the disruptive force of the Piceno

The first is the
Offida Pecorino Villa Angela 2023, a wine of great drinkability that also has on its side a very attractive label (we awarded it in The Essential Guide this year’s “Most Beautiful Label”). It is produced by the company Velenosi. And if today Ascolano wines have international consideration much is due to the effective work of Angela Velenosi, who travels the world to sell her own, but who inevitably performs ambassadorial work to the entire area. For the past few years, backing Angela in her ongoing efforts are her children Marianna, to marketing, and Matteo, in the winery.

Zaccagnini, the bottles with the “tralcetto”

The Abruzzo champion, on the other hand, is the
Abruzzo Pecorino Chronicon 2023 by Zaccagnini, one of the historical signatures of Abruzzo winemaking, which puts together a significant quantity of production with respectable average quality. Owned by Marcello Zaccagnini, can count on the harvest of 500 hectares of vineyards, partly owned, partly leased. Wines that are technical and characterful at the same time, very polished but full of vibrancy, excellent in both white and red versions.
