Italian Wine Landscape Day

October 20 - October 25

GPVI 2026: The first Italian Wine Landscape Day kicks off on October 20th. From 20 to 25 October, 30 initiatives in 12 regions and 19 Italian provinces

On October 20, 2026, the 26th° anniversary of the signing of the European Landscape Convention, the first Italian Viticultural Landscape Day – GPVI kicks off, conceived and promoted by the International Association Iter Vitis – Iter Vitis Italia, the Italian national structure of the Council of Europe Cultural Itinerary dedicated to the culture of vines and wine.

Twelve regions, 19 provinces, and 30 initiatives make up the first National Program, which, from October 20th to 25th, will involve territories and communities across Italy in the spirit of “Landscapes of Lives. Landscapes of life”.

A program spread throughout Italy

A widespread calendar of scientific conferences, public meetings, guided tours, cultural itineraries, wine tourism experiences, contemporary art exhibitions and installations, workshops, educational activities, and social inclusion experiences, to showcase the rich Italian winemaking landscape and recognize its value as a cultural, environmental, productive, and identity heritage, an expression of the history, work, knowledge, and lives of communities.

The opening day in Sambuca di Sicilia

The inaugural day will take place in Sambuca di Sicilia, in the heart of the Sicilian Lands, where Iter Vitis originated. A program that will intertwine landscape education, memory, wine culture, and regional development: from an educational visit to the Vigneto Cana, dedicated to the new generations, to the assembly of the Sicilian Wine Production District, to the opening public meeting at Palazzo Panitteri, with readings from Wine to Wine by Mario Soldati, the presentation of the National Program, and a discussion between institutions, businesses, research, culture, and tourism on the future of wine-growing regions.

From the Cinque Terre to Pantelleria: the variety of wine-growing landscapes

From the Cinque Terre to Pantelleria, from the Langhe to Irpinia, from Franciacorta to Chianti, from Maremma to Vulture, the program will traverse some of the most representative landscapes of Italian viticulture, connecting different experiences and sensibilities.

From the terraces of heroic viticulture to volcanic vineyards, from archaeological landscapes to designer cellars, from wine museums to historic villages, to experiences of social innovation, the first GPVI offers a reading of the landscape as a living heritage, the result of the relationships between nature, culture, productive activities, and community.

Contemporary art, research and sustainability

The dialogue between contemporary art and the wine-growing landscape takes on particular importance, thanks also to the contribution of MetodoContemporaneo. Widespread itineraries through the arts, wine, and landscape, involving wineries, museums, foundations, and cultural sites in various Italian regions.

Alongside artistic and wine tourism experiences, the programme devotes space to scientific research, biodiversity, environmental sustainability, the protection of historic landscapes and the challenges posed by climate change, as well as to the education of new generations, inclusion and the social role of viticulture.

A network of protagonists to enhance the territories

The Day is brought to life by a complex network of key players: wineries, public institutions, universities and research centers, museums, foundations, cultural associations, territorial development organizations, schools, and third sector organizations, along with professionals from culture, art, agriculture, and tourism.

This participation expresses the Day’s vocation to build relationships and collaborations between diverse stakeholders, recognizing the landscape as the common thread of Italian viticulture’s identities and a strategic resource for the sustainable development of the regions.

An annual event for the future of the wine-growing landscape

Italian Viticultural Landscape Day was born with the aim of becoming an annual national event dedicated to understanding, protecting, and enhancing grapevine landscapes, promoting a growing awareness of their value and the shared responsibility for their conservation and transmission to future generations.

From Sambuca di Sicilia to vineyards throughout Italy, the first edition thus begins a collective journey of knowledge, participation, and collaboration to preserve and enhance the extraordinary diversity of Italy’s wine-growing landscapes.
