Here is the top tier of our pyramid for this thirteenth edition of The Essential Guide to Italian Wine. The Double and Triple Seals 2027. For us, these are the best Italian wines for the coming season—truly magnificent wines that, needless to say, will remain outstanding for years to come.
As we’ve seen in recent days, our award is given for scores above 95/100 with the DoctorWine smiley face. This means that Daniele Cernilli “puts his reputation on the line”—he takes personal responsibility (DoctorWine is his pseudonym)—whether he awarded it personally or whether one of his contributors proposed it.
Among the seals—that is, the wines awardedthe DoctorWine logo seal, there is a further hierarchy within our ratings, which is also clearly visible: thedouble smiley faceis awarded to wines that scored 98/100 (40 this year), while those reaching 99/100 or even 100/100—none this year—receive the triple Seal (11 wines).
This represents a very small number of wines— 1.5% of our already rigorous selection, and they represent the very pinnacle of the quality pyramid in Italian winemaking. We felt it was only right to highlight this more clearly.
