From 1968, the first vintage, to the latest currently on the market, 2022. Here are all the vintages ever produced of Tenuta San Guido’s Sassicaia, the progenitor of Bolgheri wines. The wine that marked a turning point in Tuscan and Italian wine production.
This is a vertical tasting of Sassicaia composed in several stages. From the 1968 vintage to the sensational 2015 the organoleptic sheets were made over a period of about a year and a half. The last 7 vintages, on the other hand, from 2016 to 2022, are updates made possible thanks to the tastings we do annually for The Essential Guide to Italian Wine.

For the first part therefore I used notes taken as I tasted the various vintages I had in my personal cellar, partly purchased, partly sent to me by Niccolo Incisa who in the last 20 years at least has sent me two at the time of wine release. A small privilege for which I thank him and now share, at least literally, with all readers.
It is obvious that tastings and scores refer to the bottles I had and the wines I actually tasted and rated. The tasting is completely complete, as far as I know. Only the 1969 and 1973 versions, which were not produced, are missing.
A tribute to Giacomo Tachis
The idea of making a definitive vertical of Sassicaia was something I had for a long time, not surprisingly I filed wines as I tasted them. Then, after the disappearance of Giacomo Tachis, it also took on another meaning and also tells about his entire professional life.
The last few vintages, from 2011 onward, were taken care of by. Graziana Grassini, a student of Tachis and whom he himself had indicated as his heir. But certainly, when it comes to Sassicaia, in addition to the Incisas, Tachis’ name must be counted among its makers, which is why I dedicate this work to his memory.

Sassicaia in brief
Sassicaia, historically a blend of. 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc. After careful grape selection, soft pressing and controlled alcoholic fermentations are carried out. Macerations are generally moderate (depending on vintage and parcel), with optimal extraction in terms of polyphenols and aromas. After spontaneous malolactic fermentation, the wine undergoes a maturation period of about 2 years in French oak barrels of different tonnages, with a variable percentage of new barrels, about 30-40%. It is then racked into steel tanks for the final stage of mass selection before blending.

The 2022 vintage was hot, but Bolgheri’s favorable microclimate allowed it to maintain a good balance between acidity and freshness.
Bright ruby with purple highlights. Complex, fine and intense aromas between Mediterranean scrub and pine resin, miritillo, black currant and cassis, slight sweet spices. Very elegant on the palate, balanced, great taste-olfactory harmony, silky tannins, pleasant and persistent finish.

Very positive seasonal trend, with a harsh winter and a spring alternating between sun and sporadic rains. The hot summer resulted in a balanced autumn bringing healthy grapes and excellent grape-seed and stem lignification.
Intense, concentrated garnet ruby. Aromas of formidable complexity, with even varietal notes of blueberry and raspberry, then tobacco, sweet spices, maraschino cherry and typical hints of humus and Mediterranean scrub. Exceptional balance, with barely noticeable and velvety tannins, already buffered by a deep and warm, enveloping structure of remarkable depth and great persistence. Historical version.

Enveloping, balsamic, complex and particularly fine on the nose, with aromas of blueberry, pine resin, Mediterranean scrub, black currant, blackberry, mild sweet spices and tobacco. A classic vintage, with no excessive heat and occasional rainfall during the vine’s growing season. Phenolic ripening of the grapes was excellent, which allowed for the excellent development of aromas and acidity.
Intense and bright ruby. Olfactory profile of extraordinary finesse, with notes of blueberry, pine resin, Mediterranean scrub, black currant, blackberry, mild sweet spices and tobacco. Nimble and composed palate, very elegant, saline, with extremely polished tannins, forming an aristocratic flavor silhouette for one of the best versions ever.

Intense and vivid ruby. Broad and enveloping, ethereal hints, with notes of blueberry, tobacco, maraschino cherries, wet earth, sweet spices, balsamic hints in the background. The perfect harvest, hot but not torrid, with no drought problems and perfectly ripened grapes. The result is an immense Sassicaia, among the best ever.
Intense ruby color, lively and bright. Aromas range from blueberry and black currant notes to slight spicy and underbrush sensations in an already broad but equally youthful profile. Palate taut, saline, full-bodied but taut and not heavy, very elegant, with a fantastic relationship between alcoholic warmth and the refined agility of barely noticeable, velvety and particularly appealing tannins. Difficult year, cold and rainy as we have not seen in years. Yet the “star” of Sassicaia, as in other similar vintages, 2002, 1992, 1984, 1972, shone again. This is not a version to put in the annals, but a Sassicaia nonetheless surprising.
The color is bright and intense ruby. Fine and delicate nose, notes of black currant, blood orange, vanilla, slight cocoa, hints of tobacco and mint. Palate taut and saline, elegant, composed, with barely noticeable tannins and a subtle but long finish. Never disappoints, in short, even in a difficult vintage.

One could speak of a magic triad for the latest versions of Sassicaia. So much so that the 2013 almost replicates, with entirely different characteristics, the class of the previous vintages. More austere and surly, also due to extreme youth, but fascinating especially in perspective.

Bright and intense ruby color. A good version but not as “happy” as could have been expected from such an important vintage.
It has a deep ruby color, concentrated though less vivid than ’92. The aromas are intense, concentrated in which vanilla, red fruit (morello cherry) and a very light note of hay are noticeable. The taste is intense, persistent, concentrated and with a very pleasant finish of red fruits. The vintage, if it is possible, was even worse than ’72. The very rainy summer heavily affected the behavior of the vineyard even though the necessary physiological ripeness of the grapes was achieved. Maceration, however, was short because the tannins to be extracted, in quantity and quality, were scarce but in any case capable of withstanding 18 months in barrique.

First Sassicaia produced on a large scale (69,000 bottles were produced ) although due to internal problems at the winery it would take 10 years to repeat this quantitative performance. The weather pattern was quite favorable with just the right amount of heat and enough humidity to ensure excellent grapes. Maceration took place in 20 hl open oak vats and aging – 16 months – in Slavonian barriques built in Conegliano Veneto. Still has an intense aroma and tannicity balanced with structure. Good softness.
Sassicaia 1968
Score: 78/100

The vintage is indicative. It is actually a “blend” between ’67, ’68-which represented much of the wine’s skeleton-’69 and a small amount of ’65. Today, finding a bottle is almost impossible, and the last remaining ones have quotations approaching eight thousand euros.
The color is distinctly brick-colored, with fair concentration. The aroma is highly evolved, with some signs of oxidation, and with hints of nuts in spirit and goudron. The flavor shows symptoms of a waning phase of evolution, although the tannic component is still present and the oxidized elements are not entirely prevalent.
