Vittorio Frescobaldi, a leading figure in Italian viticulture in the second half of the 20th century, has died at the age of 97. At the helm of the historic family winery, he oversaw its modernization and expansion into international markets, contributing to the global recognition of Tuscany’s great wines.

After earning a degree in agriculture in 1953, he began managing the family’s agricultural properties even before completing his studies, working alongside his father Lamberto and eventually taking over responsibility for them.
The Modernization of the Company
Starting in the 1960s, Vittorio Frescobaldi was one of the architects of the transformation of the family’s traditional agricultural operation into a modern winery. New vineyards were planted, wineries were built, and a sales network was established in Italy and abroad. This was done with a clear commitment to producing quality wines and showcasing the distinct characteristics of the various estates.
In 1980, when Marchesi de’ Frescobaldi was reorganized as a corporation, he became its president. During his tenure, the group consolidated its presence in the main regions of Tuscany—from Nipozzano in Chianti Rufina to Pomino, and all the way to Montalcino, where CastelGiocondo was established in 1989.
The Meeting with Robert Mondavi
One of the most significant milestones in his entrepreneurial career was his partnership with Robert Mondavi. In 1995, the two signed a joint venture agreement that gave rise to Luce della Vite, a project born in Montalcino from the blend of Sangiovese and Merlot and the desire to create a dialogue between Tuscan and Californian winemaking cultures.
The partnership with Mondavi subsequently led to the acquisition of Tenuta dell’Ornellaia in 2002. In 2006, Vittorio Frescobaldi founded Tenute di Toscana, which brought together CastelGiocondo, Luce della Vite, and Ornellaia.
A Life in the Agricultural World
Appointed a Cavaliere del Lavoro in 1977, Vittorio Frescobaldi also held positions in the agricultural sector. From 1986 to 1990, he served as vice president of Confagricoltura, and in 2004 he became president of the Tuscan Group of the Cavalieri del Lavoro.
In 2007, he stepped down as chief operating officer of Marchesi de’ Frescobaldi, remaining on the board of directors and assuming the role of honorary chairman of the family holding company. Leadership of the company then passed to the next generation, with his son Lamberto Frescobaldi serving as president of Marchesi Frescobaldi since 2013.
With the passing of Vittorio Frescobaldi, we have lost one of the entrepreneurs who guided Italian wine through its transition. From a largely traditional agricultural sector to a modern, quality-oriented industry capable of competing on international markets. In his case, this journey largely coincided with Tuscany’s rise as one of the regions that symbolize the global wine industry.
