In addition to rating wines on a scale of cents, with smiley faces used to graphically represent the ratings, the Essential Guide to Italian Wines also features a rating system for wineries ranging from zero to three stars. Of course, three stars is the highest rating.
The stars represent an overall evaluation of the company, not directly tied to the wines presented and evaluated in the current edition of the guide, but rather based on other criteria. The importance of the brand—first and foremost, its iconic status within its region of origin. Then, its trajectory over the past few decades, its consistent quality, and its international reputation.
