Bolgheri Superiore 2022 will be released only in a few months, but we had the opportunity to do a very early tasting and anticipate our first impressions.
Early September; high temperatures, clear skies and the linear beauty of the Cypress Avenue, were the main elements of the biennial Bolgheri consortium dinner, which was a resounding success as always. Kudos go to all the organizers (swan song of director Riccardo Binda who has returned to his native Pavia lands to head the Oltrepò Pavese Consortium) and to the producers who enhanced the dinner with their wines offered in both large format and various vintages allowing for a compelling and comforting tasting retrospective of the appellation.
The next day in addition to a few visits to member wineries we had a preview of the 2022 vintage of Bolgheri Superiori. Thoroughbred preview given that the wines will be released no earlier than April next year; some samples were still in wood others were in tanks awaiting bottling while a portion, more than half, were already in bottles.
Focusing on the latter, we believe that the denomination has reached a great maturity both stylistically and of interpretation of the vintages.
The year 2022 was a rather droughty and with average high temperatures especially in the spring and summer months, then even heavy rains in August turned the tables favoring more late-ripening grapes. The harvests ended in late September, and the wines showed a pleasantness that exceeded expectations with an unexpected savoriness. A vintage, then, that presents itself. balanced with sunny drinking tones and a comforting readiness.
