The 60th anniversary of the Livon company

To celebrate its 60th anniversary, the Livon winery organized a vertical tasting of its flagship wine, Braide Alte.

Contributed by Stefania Vinciguerra – The Livon company was founded in 1964 by. Dorino Livon who, as a timber merchant, decided to buy a vineyard and later build the first winery in Vencò, literally right next to the border with Slovenia. Today the company owns some 50 hectares of vineyards in Collio and 20 in the Colli Orientali. Also still in Friuli, it owns Villa Chiopris, with its accommodation facility, and 90 hectares of lowland vineyards, plus the small jewel-holding in Chianti, Borgo Salcetino, and the company’s other jewel Colsanto in Bevagna, Umbria.

For celbrating the 60th anniversary of the winery’s founding, Valneo and Tonino Livon, with their respective children Matteo and Francesca, along with Rossella, Valneo’s wife, organized a series of twenties, including a vertical tasting of Braide Alte, the flagship white wine that has won multiple awards each year. The name is composed of the words “Braide,” which in Friuli means a plot of agricultural land, and “Alte,” because at altitude, in the hills.

The wine, after several years of trials, is officially presented with the 1996 vintage. The soil: a gently sloping northward slope of ponca, an alternation of marl and sandstone typical of Collio. The grapes: Chardonnay and Sauvignon for more than 80%, then Picolit and a small part of Moscato Giallo. Vinification in barriques (now moving toward 7-hectoliter barrels).

In general, it can be said that the blend expresses itself with complexity, harmony and elegance and evolves for many years without losing its excellent drinkability.

At the conclusion of this tasting, a wine made at the completion of the Livon winery’s 50th year was presented, called 50th anniversary 2014. Purtroppo, l’annata è stata molto piovosa (da metà giugno alla vendemmia 4 giorni di sole). Eppure il vino, ottenuto con un’accurata selezione dei grappoli di Friulano and Ribolla Gialla, is very fresh and fruity, with clear citrus notes, remarkably pleasant.
