Caveau Bosan, the novelty of the Gerardo Cesari company.

Michele Cesari e Giovanni Lai

The historic Gerardo Cesari winery, rooted in the Valpolicella territory, presents its newest addition: the Caveau Bosan, where historical vintages of the famous Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva Bosan are kept.

Caveau Bosan is the newest addition to the Gerardo Cesari winery. The winery is divided between its headquarters in the Lake Garda area of Cavaion Veronese and the one in Fumane, one of the five municipalities of Valpolicella Classica. Bosan, however, proudly bears the signature of Marano di Valpolicella, and now I’ll explain what that means.

Gerardo Cesari and the new Caveau

Cesari Caveau Bosan
Let’s start with the assumption that we are talking about a’
historical company in the area which bears the name and surname of one person. This person in 1936 founded the company destined to become in time also famous in the international arena as one of the pioneers of Amarone export to the United States in 1973. Since 2014, the company has been part of the Caviro Group, which, while bringing to mind the most famous of cardboard wines, must also make us think about the future and innovation. Research and experimentation.

Principles these applied right away at Cesari as well, so much so that in 2024 the company, under the leadership of general manager Giovanni Lai, opened a new chapter. 140 hectares in Valpolicella between those owned and those conferred, 10 in Lugana, 30 employees and 2 oenologists, here are some numbers. A reality more and more structured also for the reception in the territory (I refer now to the headquarters in Fumane) with new spaces for tasting, small tasting events and direct purchase as well as the brand new vault. In fact, winemaker Michele Gamba couldn’t wait to show someone the treasure trove in old vintages that the winery had long guarded. That someone became precisely Giovanni Lai, who since joining the winery has worked to safeguard it, enhance it and make it usable.

Thus the vault is inaugurated, to store the historic vintages (not all of which are for sale) of the production’s flagship, theAmarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva Bosan. Ben 10.000 sono le bottiglie ad ora custodite a partire dalla prima annata, la 1997, fino al latest release 2015.

Right there, where Bosan remarries, also triumphs a tasting table ready to host truly special tastings. There indeed, where time has stood still, we tasted for the first time a historical vertical. It is not difficult to perceive, in addition to the usual wine scents, also how much the times and ways of making wine have changed, especially if that wine is an Amarone della Valpolicella, traditionally a child of drying and cold weather.

Being a wine child of a single plot is not necessarily always cool. When it’s the right vintage it certainly is, but if things in the vineyard get complicated, the game becomes a little more complex. However, if you are a single 10-hectare plot, you already have a better chance of always ensuring an over-the-top product year after year. The secret is selection. Practice that in Valpolicella should always be the basis of everything, accepting the risk involved. Ten hectares at an altitude of 500 meters, all planted with Veronese pergola with the main varieties of Valpolicella. A few terraces here and there to accommodate the natural slope of the Marano valley. Exposure, ventilation, slope, altitude, mixed soil matrix, good availability of water without stagnation. All the prerequisites to excel, confirming that one does not become Cru by chance.

The importance of opening doors

Cesari Caveau Bosan, the bottles
The treasure stored in the heart of the winery today is finally free to express itself. The winery is investing in opening its doors to patrons, whether they are wine experts, big fans or novices. The opportunity is great not only for
to taste and experience on the farm but above all to touch the care and attention that are employed, to learn about the commitment to research and development that companies like Cesari can and should pursue for an ever-modern and never tired future of wine.

Having a large group behind us for Cesari is certainly a guarantee in evolution, ability to invest, but also a guarantee of maintaining history and tradition, uniqueness and identity.
