Gino Magnabosco, a legendary figure in the Soave wine industry and the driving force behind the family-owned Monte Tondo winery, has tragically passed away at the age of 74. He lost his life while working in his vineyards in Cazzano di Tramigna in a tractor accident. He spent his life among the vineyards, the winery, and his family.
The Veronese wine world mourns Gino Magnabosco, the longtime owner of Monte Tondo, a Soave winery to which he dedicated much of his life. Magnabosco died on Saturday, September 19, at the age of 74, in a farming accident that occurred in the Campiano area, in the municipality of Cazzano di Tramigna.
He was working in the vineyards when the tractor he was driving veered off the dirt road and plunged down an embankment. The efforts of the Suem 118 emergency response team proved futile. The Carabinieri and inspectors from the Spisal division of ULSS 9 Scaligera are currently investigating the circumstances of the accident.
A Lifetime Dedicated to Monte Tondo
The history of Gino Magnabosco largely coincides with the modern history of Monte Tondo. The winery took its first steps in the early 1970s, when Aldo Magnabosco purchased three hectares of Garganega vineyards at the foot of Monte Tondo. At the end of that same decade, Gino, the second generation of the family, joined the business, marking a turning point for the company with the construction of a larger, more technologically advanced winery.
Over the years, the company has grown, consolidating its presence in the Soave hills and later in the Cazzano di Tramigna area. Between 1985 and 2015, the family acquired vineyards in some of the most prestigious areas of the two municipalities. In the mid-1990s, the next generation joined the business—the children Stefania, Luca, and Marta—who are now actively involved in the family business.
Magnabosco was, above all, a winemaker. The winery itself has always described him as a man who personally oversaw the vineyards and wines, every step of the way. His name has remained closely associated with Soave and, in particular, with the winery’s cru wines such as Casette Foscarin and Foscarin Slavinus, which come from the vineyards of Monte Foscarino, on steep slopes with basalt-based soil.

The family itself announced his passing on social media, choosing a photograph of Gino among the vineyards and the freshly harvested grapes. In the message, they described him as “a father, husband, grandfather, and the heart and soul of our family and our winery,” recalling a life dedicated to family, the land, and wine, as well as the values of hard work, simplicity, and love for the local area that he passed on to his children. Monte Tondo has suspended operations as a sign of mourning.
