San Leonardo 2020: the Red Wine of the Year

We elected San Leonardo 2020, Tenuta San Leonardo‘s celebrated Bordeaux blend, Red Wine of the Year, an award that recognizes not only the wine’s intrinsic quality, but its ability to evoke territory, balance and longevity.

Tenuta San Leonardo, owned by the Marchesi Guerrieri Gonzaga family and located in Trentino, has always grown so-called international grapes following the dictates of viticulture most respectful of terroir.

Vigneti delle Dolomiti San Leonardo is a classic Bordeaux blend, with a predominance of Cabernet Sauvignon, flanked by Carmenère and Merlot, sourced from vines within the ancient monastery walls. The result is a wine of undoubted finesse and elegance, extremely reliable year after year, from the first vintage in 1982 to the present.

It is made with spontaneous fermentation in small cement tanks, prolonged maceration (12-15 days), frequent pumping-over, and artisanal attention to temperature and oxygen control. It matures at least 24 months in medium-toasted French oak barriques and tonneaux (several passages: first, second and third use), followed by another 24 months in bottle before release. At a time when alcohol is in the crosshairs of the health-conscious, we emphasize that the alcohol content is very low, around 12.5 percent vol…

The 2020 vintage was characterized by a summer with sunny days balanced by regular rainfall, ideal conditions that allowed the grapes to ripen harmoniously.

Satisfaction expressed by San Leonardo in the words of Marquis Anselmo Guerrieri Gonzaga: “The 2020 is destined to remain in the annals of the estate as one of its most delicate and fascinating expressions. This vintage underscores the essence of the San Leonardo philosophy: a wine that embodies refinement and longevity, able to excite today and surprise in the years to come with its great evolutionary capacity “.

A great wine that already excites today, to be treasured for tomorrow.

60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Carmenère, 10% Merlot. Two years in barrique. Deep, almost impenetrable in its vital red, harmonious color of great depth. Spicy fragrances, small summer fruits, and the breath of a lush autumn oak forest. The sip is even more enchanting than other memorable vintages: polished tannins, in tune with perfect acidity, for a persistence that has the inexhaustible. It is the subdued magic of a wine that stimulates enveloping passions. (N.P.)
