The Rosso Morellino event underscores the appellation’s dynamism: new experiences in the region, the debut of the Superiore style, and wines that are increasingly distinctive. Reporting for us, Riccardo Viscardi.
Morellino Red Tells the Story of the Region

Rosso Morellino is a wonderful event organized by the Consortium for the Protection of the Appellation, which offers the opportunity to discover the region through its wines and, thanks to the collaboration with Andrea Gurayev (Saturnia Bike), including cycling through the vineyards on high-performance BMC e-bikes (with pedal assistance). This way, anyone can explore the vineyards while having fun and experiencing the different facets of the wine region up close.
The enchanting hilly landscape which slopes down toward the sea, produces wines with many facets. Today, the appellation has gained a greater awareness of its terroir, and each producer interprets it with a personal vision. This gives rise to Vintage Morellini wines, very easy to drink, with well-integrated tannins and a savory freshness that intensifies as one approaches the coast. The aromas are warmer in the coastal areas and more fragrant and fruity inland, where the daily temperature range is greater.
Morellino Superiore Is Officially Launched
Among the most important developments is the official launch of the Morellino Superiore category: It must undergo a minimum period of aging in wood and may be sold starting in the second year following the harvest. This amendment to the production regulations brings them in line with an established practice, given that many of the most ambitious Morellini wines already fall into this category. This change will make it even easier for consumers to navigate the appellation and make informed, targeted purchases.
The Morellino di Scansano thus reaffirms itself as a dynamic and constantly evolving appellation, with new wineries and wines of ever-higher quality.
Wine Meets Mixology
Morellino’s entry into mixology is also interesting. Thanks to an agreement with the Consortium, the Valentina, a bartender at D Park in Grosseto He presented two excellent cocktails: a lighter one made with rum and a more full-bodied one made with vodka, both very well-crafted and enjoyable. An idea worth following as things develop.

We selected two vintage Morellini (the 2025), two future Superiori (from the 2024 vintage), and two Riserve, also from the 2024 vintage.
