A highlight of the Tuscan previews was the tasting of Chianti Classico wines. Riccardo Viscardi comments on the vintages presented in the previews and suggests the best drinks.
For the past few years, during the Tuscan previews, I have been focusing on the Chianti Classico vintage drawing great satisfaction from it; this alleviates the gloom of the Leopolda with its dark, very dark tones. We are always over 100 samples arising mainly from two vintages. This year they were stage the 2022 and 2023.
Cutting it short, the 2022 is better than the 2023 not kissed by a clement weather pattern, in fact almost mocked by a “cynical and barbaric” fate that tested the winemaker who made the difference.

The beauty of Chianti Classico vintages is that they give a crisp and reliable reading of the territories and winery style, being free of certain technical or ideological superstructures that sometimes, in “more important” wines, tend to stifle the “sense” of this vast territory that originally indicated a way, an idea of making wine. An idea of drinking territory, simple, immediate and highly enjoyable that has made it the best-known Italian wine in the world.
Chianti Classico vintages maintain this ancient characterization, fruity, flavorful, vertical and with beautiful freshness without having body-builder excesses; polite tannins in the southern, clayey areas, a freshness that rises with elevations, in the boulder and sandy soils that are quite rare. Balances of freshness and tannins present in Chianti Classico on more consistent alberese-based soils and in mixed soils. Fragrance remains the hallmark, the rest are winks and variations donated by the territory that impact the various souls of the final consumer who in Chianti Classico always finds a port to which to go safe and happy.
