Chiorri, historic Umbrian winery

Francesca Granelli da Chiorri

More than 130 years of history for one of Umbria’s most historic wineries. Founded in 1890, Cantina Chiorri embodies the expression of the ancient tradition of the Colli Perugini.

The Chiorri Winery embodies the expression of the ancient winemaking tradition and more of the Colli Perugini, along the fascinating road from Perugia to Todi.

Its genesis took shape in 1890, with the purchase of a farmhouse and land by the founders Francesco and Pasquale Chiorri, who decided to settle on a property that stands on the ancient 17th-century convent of St. Thomas. That land intrinsically suited to viticulture thus became the perfect place for a project that would mark the destiny of the Chiorri family and, more generally, of Umbrian viticulture.

Following World War I, then, the family’s commitment to the economy of the village of Sant’Enea was recognized by the awarding of a heraldic coat of arms, also present on the company logo, depicting a tree, the emblem of agriculture, a rampant lion, the symbol of strength and of the city of Perugia, and three stars, to commemorate the three succeeding generations of the family.

From the first bottled wines to pure Grechetto

Thus we come to the post-war period, when Antonio, grandson of Francesco and son of Pasquale, devoted himself exclusively to wine production. Later, with the arrival of sisters Franca and Maria Concetta Chiorri and their respective spouses in the 1970s, the winery experienced a real expansion. With the first bottlings of the rosè, red and white wines of the  Colli Perugini line, the first exports to the United States and Germany arrived, and in the 1980s production of Grechetto in purity.

Production

Today, Monica Chiorri and her husband Francesco carry on the project with renewed vigor and vision, keeping intact the passion that has distinguished the family for more than a century. Current production is about 100 thousand bottles, the vineyards, with medium-textured soils composed of silt, clay and sand, and strong concentration of clay in the depths, extend over 25 hectares. Varieties range from Grechetto, Malvasia and Pinot Grigio whites to Sangiovese, Sagrantino, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot reds.
