Galluccio: the wines of Caserta’s volcano.

In the northern part of the province of Caserta, the Galluccio Doc appellation features wines based on Falanghina and Aglianico. A very small production of close to 200,000 bottles.

With a population of 2,000, Galluccio covers an area of thirty-two square kilometers, between the slopes of Mount Camino, nestled in the Roccamonfina volcanic group., an integral part of the Monte S. Croce Mountain Community. Located in the northern province of Caserta, the area has an altitude ranging between 600 and 900 meters above sea level, surrounded by a natural landscape characterized by vineyards and chestnut trees centuries-old. In short, a magical place, rich in history and with a strong wine vocation.

The Territory

Exploring unknown trails is an experience to be had in Galluccio, starting with the
waterfalls along the Cocuruzzo stream, to climbing through the woods, the undisputed realm of porcini, ovules, chanterelles, drumsticks and chiodini. Other local delicacies include extra virgin olive oil, artisanal cheeses, honey, hazelnuts and chestnuts.

The history of this small municipality, an ancient Roman colony, is indelibly marked by the presence of the Aurunci, Sidicini, Caleni and Samnites. Situated at the peak On the plain of the Garigliano River, the municipality is dotted with small villages and hamlets, including the charming Saracen village of Sipicciano, where you can admire the Palazzo De Petrillo, the small church of Corbello and the church of Santa Reparata. Also not to be missed is the famous collegiate church of St. Stephen, dating from 1345, in which a magnificent gilded coffered ceiling dating from the 17th century is preserved. As well as a painting of the Martyrdom of St. Stephen signed by Jacopo Cestari, a pupil of Luca Giordano.

Galluccio has been famous since Roman times for the quality of its wines. But it gained official recognition with the awarding of the DOC only in 1997, confirming its prestige and success in the contemporary wine scene. The testimony of Giannanotonio Campano, an eminent humanist born in 1429 in Cavelle, a small village in Galluccio, highlights its
wine vocation since time immemorial and going forward in time, in the 1960s, Luigi Veronelli himself mentions Galluccio in his publications. The production area of Galluccio Doc includes the territory along the border with Lazio

with the municipalities of Conca della Campania, Galluccio, Mignano Monte Lungo, Rocca d’Evandro, and Tora and Piccilli. The main grape varieties are. the Falanghina and the Aglianico. Attualmente l’intera produzione non supera le 200.000 bottiglie.

Companies

Among the first companies to believe in Galluccio’s winemaking potential was Cantine Telaro, an example of passion and dedication to wine shared by the entire family since 1987. The winery covers about 100 hectares. Porto di Mola stands right in Galluccio, near an ancient Roman-era commercial port found in an archaeological dig in 1992, inspiring the name of the estate, which has about 300 hectares of vineyards, olive groves and large green areas. In Conca della Campania, Poderi Foglia,

covers an area of about four hectares, an area that is part of a large estate, embellished by the remains of a Roman cistern that enriches the estate with charm. At the foot of Mount Camino, Villa Sorbo, established in 2013, occupies an area of about 20 hectares cultivated with vineyards and olive groves and is nestled among forests of holm oaks and oaks. Masseria Starnali is located between Mount Caruso and the Gulf of Gaeta, on the edge of Roccamonfina Park. In its 40 hectares devoted to the production of wine, oil and chestnuts, it is dedicated to organic farming .
