Moncalisse, the Walch family’s landing in Trentino

From the experience of the Walch family comes Moncalisse, a new project dedicated exclusively to Trento Doc, the first from a South Tyrolean family in Trentino. A spectacular winery in the hills of Civezzano and two first-class labels mark the debut of a reality destined to become a protagonist of Trentino sparkling wine.

An iconic winery between architecture and territory

A preview tasting of the first two Trento Doc wines strictly produced in Trentino by a company historically rooted in Alto Adige is definitely portentous. Same praise for the spectacular winery built by the Walch family in Torchio di Civezzano. On the hill south of Mount Calisio, the mountain also called Argentario, which separates the Adige Valley, Trento and Valsugana.

Strategic wine enterprise, entrusted to Carolina and Julia, the two young daughters of Werner and Elena Walch. It is no coincidence that the name of the maison is Moncalisse. A phonetic game that seals the link with the specificity of the territory.

Fascinating winery in architecture, between postmodern rationality. White in synergy with red porphyry (the Cembra Valley is behind) and a sinuous, in some ways superstructural dynamic thrust.

The productive heart under Mount Calisio

The opening opened wide the access to the facility in a
scenic jubilation. Rounded outline on the outside, with a terrace also intended as a bistro and wine tourism. Descending a staircase in perfect harmony with the sinuosity of the building. One arrives at the operational heart: storage rooms, rooms for aging on the lees and processing areas.

Most striking is the very deep garnet-red concrete frail, destined for future oenological events, a skewed sliver that recalls the striking, as yet unexplored argentiferous slopes of Mount Calisio. The vinification of the grapes takes place strictly by gravity. As in a symbolic silver mine, naturally air-conditioned.

An enological team consisting of. Stefano Bolognani, a talented sparkling wine maker from Trentino, with the supervision of Odilon de Varine, renowned chef de cave champenois.

Winery among the most spectacular made so far, probably the most fascinating in Trentino. With almost 10 thousand cubic meters of volume, perfectly integrated into the architectural project signed by Nadia Moroder and David Stuflesser of Ortisei, designed to better manage the harvests of the surrounding 12 hectares of vineyards.

The first Moncalisse bubbles

Moncalisse TrentodocThe inaugural banquet, with delicacies from the Miil restaurant in Cermes and an evocative closing entrusted to the dancers, featured a preview of the first two versions of Moncalisse Trento Doc. Just 5 thousand bottles of classic method that immediately demonstrated the high value of bubbles born on the Mons Argentarius.

A Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Reserve 2017 obtained, as it stands out on the label, from historic vines recovered in rows that predate land rearrangement. Vines that are also guardians of rock engravings. Millennia-old signs that the two Walch sisters intend to revive in the dialogue between time and land, reinterpreting them in a contemporary key.

The taste is invigorating: great aromatic drive, beautiful golden hue and a graceful sip.  Full of energy, with an underlying vinous timbre supported by a refined spiciness, accompanied by hints of lemon zest and a remarkable smoothness on the palate.

A project with major ambitions

The Walchs’ wine project, which looks to a future production of 100,000 bottles, also features a
Trento Doc Moncalisse Millesimato Extra Brut Riserva 2019, fermented partly in steel and partly in small oak barrels.

Two labels that symbolize a denomination that fears no boundaries and that confirm, once again, the excellent state of form of the Trento Doc.
