A restaurant serving hearty, flavorful dishes in a suburb of Rome. A standout spot in an area that doesn’t have many landmarks, but with a crowd eager to enjoy it. Iolanda Maggio tells us more.
Il Gatto Insaccato is located in Selva Nera, an area on the northwestern outskirts of the capital, just outside the Grande Raccordo Anulare. The name says a lot, but not everything. Because behind the irony of the pun, there is a serious statement of intent, built around a raw material (the sausages , in fact) treated with respect and, above all, with expertise.
Plenty of classic cutting boards
We are in a neighborhood of Rome where dining is often more about convenience than about seeking out a specific destination. The concept is that of pork butcher shop: cured meats, cheeses, and specialty selections. This is where a project takes shape that extends to the bistro. The counter—whether real or imaginary—remains the center of attention. Cutting boards are a must-have: Carefully sliced hams, selections that go beyond regional borders, carefully chosen cheeses, olives, and a few artichokes in oil. Very classic and all served in generous portions.
Traditional Roman pasta dishes, followed by meat

The kitchen operates on a well-managed two-pronged approach. There is no written menu; the waiters explain it. Nor is there a wine list, you can choose from the well-stocked shelves. On one side The Great Roman Classics (carbonara, amatriciana, cacio e pepe, gricia) prepared with a sure hand, without any unnecessary “lightening” of the dishes. A few small seasonal variations, such as gricia with artichokes. On the other hand, a broader selection that reaches its highlight in the meat. Carefully selected cuts, dry-aging, precise cooking, and a focus on the quality of the ingredients. Sliced meats, steaks, sausages, and arrosticini… All strictly grilled.
Spontaneous conviviality

The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, with clear references to the old-fashioned shop. A cozy seating area in the center, with bottles of wine lining the walls. Nothing too formal—everything is well-kept but laid-back. It’s the perfect spot for a dinner with friends, a hearty aperitif, or a more relaxed meal, with a spontaneous conviviality that never gets messy. The staff in the dining room are incredibly kind and smiling—the kind who call everyone “dear” (just to give you an idea).
A simple, down-to-earth restaurant with fair prices
The added value of Il Gatto Insaccato also lies in context. In an area that doesn’t have many landmarks, this place serves as something of a draw. Il Gatto Insaccato isn’t a “trendy” restaurant, but it is simple and solid: a restaurant built on quality ingredients and culinary skill. And in Rome today, that’s no small feat. The price? It depends on how hungry you are and how much wine you drink, but it’s fair.
