From Monfortino to the rebirth of Nervi, all the way to the first autonomous tractor for viticulture. The Monforte d’Alba-based producer continues to combine winemaking excellence, entrepreneurial spirit, and technological innovation.
Roberto Conterno is a visionary and intelligent man. He is not only one of the greatest winemakers in the Langhe, the creator of an icon such as the Barolo Riserva Monfortino, but also an entrepreneur who is always looking ahead.
In recent years, he has successfully revived Nervi, a historic winery in Gattinara, restoring it to the place it deserves among the great producers of Nebbiolo from Upper Piedmont. He then also invested in the restaurant business, acquiring the restaurant Bel Sit in La Morra.
The Driverless Tractor
The latest challenge, however, comes from technology. Together with engineer Federico Bona, he has developed the first high-tech driverless tractor: a fully autonomous machine capable of operating without human intervention and set to represent a true turning point for modern viticulture.
The project was conceived during the COVID-19 pandemic, was developed by Blakshire, and has been on the market for some time now.
At a time when it is becoming increasingly difficult to find skilled workers in rural areas, a solution like this can prove to be decisive. The vehicle is designed to working safely, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, ensuring operational continuity and greater efficiency — especially in those most monotonous tasks where human distraction is always a risk.
There’s not much else to add. Roberto Conterno is not only one of the world’s best winemakers: he is someone who can transform vision into concrete innovation, demonstrating how the future of viticulture can also arise from the convergence of tradition and technology.
