This will be the third three-year term as president of the Consorzio del Vino Nobile di Montepulciano for Andrea Rossi and third also for Rossi’s vice presidents, Susanna Crociani and Luca Tiberini.

Andrea Rossi will be the president of the Consorzio del Vino Nobile di Montepulciano for a third consecutive term. He was appointed by the Consortium’s new Board of Directors, elected by the assembly last May 30, which met for the first time on the evening of Friday, June 6. The Board also wanted to confirm, again for the third consecutive three-year term, the two Vice Presidents, Susanna Cro ciani (Azienda Crociani) and Luca T iberini (Azienda Tiberini).

This unanimous confirmation for the entire presidency is not only about what has been done by the Board, but about the work of a team effort that has involved the entire social base of the Consortium, which in recent years thanks to a fruitful confrontation has led to important results, among all the certification of sustainability and especially the project of the third type of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, with the arrival of the Pievi – the first words of the reconfirmed president of the Consortium of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Andrea Rossi – this new course I hope can consolidate what has been done by looking at the future challenges of our industry, which will involve market consolidation, but also a new vision of wine designed for the consumers of tomorrow.”

Who is Andrea Rossi

Andrea Rossi, class of 1971, elected president as a member of Vecchia Cantina. A graduate of Liceo Classico “A. Poliziano” in Montepulciano, he holds a degree in Economics and Banking from the University of Siena. He has always been at his family’s side on the farm that has been a partner in Vecchia Cantina for more than 30 years. Rossi can boast long experience both politically and as a local administrator. In 2009 and 2014 he was elected mayor of the municipality of Montepulciano, a position he held until 2019. It is from his legislature that the so-called “Montepulciano System“, a governance model based on the joint coordination of the city’s main economic and attractive forces in an award-winning promotion project in Italy and around the world. Since 2023 Andrea Rossi has been president of Intesa, a publicly controlled company that operates in the public services sector in the provinces of Siena, Arezzo and Grosseto.

The projects

Rossi’s presidency projects together with Crociani and Tiberini. From the certification of sustainability according to the Equalitas standard that the Consorzio del Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, first in Italy, has obtained in 2021, to the approval at the EU level of the new specifications of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano “Pieve”. Moving on from the inclusion of “Toscana” on the label, a project to change production specifications that again saw Vino Nobile di Montepulciano lead the way for other regional appellations.

Some numbers from the Consorzio del Vino Nobile di Montepulciano

2024 was a positive year in value for the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano market. In terms ofexports last year it accounted for 65.5 percent (in 2023 it had been 66 percent), while the remaining 34.5 percent is marketed in Italy. The upward trend of recent years continues with direct sales on the farm, which in 2024 has now exceeded 35 percent. In addition, as far as the domestic market is concerned, the main sales are recorded in central Italy (62%) and particularly in Tuscany for 42%. In the north 33% is sold and in the south 5.30%. As for foreign countries, we see a pie divided in half between Europe and non-EU countries. To America (between North and South) goes 35 percent of exports, to Europe (excluding Italy) 29.2 percent. Germany continues to be Nobile’s top market with 37 percent of the export share. Continuously growing, even compared to 2023, is that of the United States coming to represent 28% of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano exports. Continuing the growth trend is Canada, which alone is worth about 5 percent of exports.
