Piedirosso: three territories, one Campanian soul

An iconic grape variety of Campania, Piedirosso-or per’ ‘e palummo-tells the story of the territory with a subtle, identifiable voice. Elegant, low in tannins and naturally fresh, it changes face depending on the soils and climates in which it is born. Vesuvius, Campi Flegrei and Sannio are the three great areas that define its style, offering different but consistent interpretations of one of Southern Italy’s most fascinating grapes. Antonella Amodio tells us about it.

Piedirosso, the red heart of Campania, is a grape variety that weaves together land, history and rebirth. Its dialect name, per’ ‘e palummo (“pigeon’s foot”), recalls the color of the cluster’s red stalk. Capable of expressing itself in streamlined and immediate versions as well as in more structured and long-lived interpretations, it is a transversal wine, a great ally of regional cuisine and increasingly central to the Campania wine narrative.

The origins of Piedirosso, between history and uncertainty

The origins of Piedirosso remain shrouded in a veil of uncertainty: it is not known precisely when this variety made its appearance. It is certain, however, that it was already present in the prosperous
Campania Felix, where authors of the time – including Pliny the Elder in the Naturalis Historia – mention it as an illustrious presence in the viticultural scene.

Many centuries later, in 1804, Nicola Columella Onorati described the rachis of the cluster as having a red tint reminiscent of the color of pigeons’ feet, an image that clarifies the origin of the name Piedirosso. Officially entered in the National Catalogue of Vine Varieties in 1970, in the past it was often used as a blending wine to soften Aglianico. Today the national vineyard area is about 700 hectares (data from Assoenologi).

Grapevine identity and profile

Piedirosso is one of the pillars of Campania’s oenology, one of the most widespread red grapes and, at the same time, the most recognizable voice of the Neapolitan wine territory. It is a grape variety of discreet, never ostentatious elegance, capable of offering very different expressions depending on the terroir.

The existence of three main areas – Vesuvius, Campi Flegrei and Sannio – is particularly significant: each imprints specific characteristics that profoundly shape the wine’s organoleptic profile. Thus, a single grape variety dialogues differently with soil, climate and winery practices, while maintaining a common stylistic signature: pale ruby to garnet color guise, restrained tannins and moderate alcohol content.

The spread of Piedirosso remains relatively limited, partly because of some agronomic difficulties: medium to late ripening, not high yields and a certain sensitivity in the vegetative phase that requires constant attention in the vineyard.

Vesuvius, Campi Flegrei, Sannio: three lands, one vine

Piedirosso del Vesuvio

Vesuvian vineyards rest on volcanic soils composed of ash, lapilli and sand, rich in macro- and micronutrients. The varying altitudes, sea breezes and Mediterranean climate favor fresh, savory wines. Here Piedirosso is historically rooted and is the basis of the Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio Rosso DOC., one of the iconic wines of the area.

The primary notes that characterize the wine when young are floral notes of violets; with evolution, nuances of Mediterranean scrub and spices appear. The tannins are soft, the sip is saline and fresh, and the volcanic component contributes to a good capacity for evolution over time.

Piedirosso of the Phlegraean Fields

Piedirosso Vineyard
lass=”yoast-text-mark” />>The Phlegrean range includes the volcanic territories of Pozzuoli, Bacoli, Monte di Procida, Giugliano in Campania, Marano, Quarto and the Phlegrean islands. Bradyseism accompanies a landscape of craters and fumaroles, where Piedirosso grows on pyroclastic rocks and sandy soils, often in hill terraces with steep slopes.

Many of the vineyards are still free-range, and there is no shortage of centuries-old rows. Here, the wine takes on a deep ruby hue; geranium, violet and resinous notes dominate the nose, while the sip is slender, markedly saline and with a characteristic smoky feel. It is the basis of the Campi Flegrei Piedirosso DOC, a filiform and elegant expression of the grape variety.

Piedirosso del Sannio

In the Sannio Benevento area, Piedirosso has a long tradition. The vineyards stand on hilly marly-clay and limestone soils, very different from the volcanic soils of other areas. The influence of Mount Taburno brings cooler temperatures and slightly later ripening.

<span style=”font-weight: 400;”>The color turns to more intense ruby hues; the aroma profile recalls raspberry, cherry, plum, with floral and peppery notes. The sip is more structured, with tannin present and slightly sharp, with good overall intensity. This interpretation falls within the DOC Sannio and related subareas.

In summary, a tale in three chapters

Piedirosso tells the story of Campania in three distinct chapters: the Vesuvius with its volcanic verticality, the Campi Flegrei with salinity and elegance, the Sannio with greater structure and depth. It is also present, albeit in a fragmented way, in the Casertano, Irpinia and the Sorrento Peninsula.

In recent years, interest in this variety has grown thanks to the work of producers and the experiments in steel, wood, amphora and ceramic. To taste a Piedirosso is to embark on a journey through the landscape, history and rural culture of Campania, discovering how a single grape variety can give rise to different but always authentic interpretations.
