Luigi Barberani, a prominent figure in Umbrian oenology, has passed away at the age of 87: The Orvieto area loses a convinced interpreter of its territory.
Born in the Orvieto area, he was the son of Vittorio Barberani, who founded the winery in 1961. Together with his wife Giovanna, he dedicated his life to enhancing the Orvieto area, particularly by focusing on native grape varieties, sustainable practices with organic vineyards and the ancient tradition of “noble rot”(botrytis cinerea) in white wines.
Under his leadership, the winery has become a reference for the area, with labels such as Calcaia, Orvieto Classico Superiore Muffa Nobile, which has been able to present Orvieto in a new light.
His vision is carried on by his sons Bernardo and Niccolò, who today continue the work in the family business. “His light will live on in every vineyard, in every bottle, and in every smile of those who knew him,” Bernardo Barberani wrote in remembering his father.
The President of the Etruscan-Roman Wine Road Association, Luigi Petrangeli, on learning the sad news, said, “We want to remember him first and foremost as a friend but also as a member of the Board of Directors of the Association of which he was a member since its founding and in which he lavished ideas and commitment to promote wineries, wine tourism, the territory and its products, with determination and constancy.”
With the passing of Luigi Barberani, wine Umbria loses not only a producer, but a passionate interpreter of its territory. His legacy lives on in the vineyards he tended, the wines he conceived and the sustainable practices he promoted.
To his family, friends and those who worked with him go the deepest condolences of the entire editorial staff of DoctorWine.
