Low-alcohol, lighter wines are finding increasingly fertile ground in our country, and in Campania, too, the phenomenon is being felt. Here is a selection of low-alcohol wines from Campania suggested by Antonella Amodio.
Today it is the Millennials and Generation Z who are significantly influencing wine consumption and creating new trends. Increasingly attentive to what they drink, these consumers are looking for products that reflect their values: sustainability, authenticity and well-being. This results in choices geared toward natural, artisanal, organic, low alcohol wines and, increasingly, toward “Skyn” (skin-contact wines), the so-called orange wines.
Even in a country like Italy, which is deeply tied to the tradition, these new preferences are finding space. In particular, there is growing interest in the conscious drinking: a lifestyle that prioritizes respect for the body, health and the environment.
This includes the phenomenon of low alcohol or completely non-alcoholic (no alcohol) wines. On the last category, that of totally non-alcoholic wines, I prefer not to comment directly, out of full respect for those who choose to drink without alcohol. In this regard editor Daniele Cernilli has already offered extensive reflections in his editorials, which I invite you to read to explore further.
As for low-alcohol wines, the attention of many producers is being focused on them, especially those who would not or could not produce dealcolates.
Why low-alcohol wines are growing
In Campania, the phenomenon is felt, for several reasons. On the one hand, road safety regulations are pushing many consumers to seek light alternatives so they can drive safely. On the other, rising temperatures, the greenhouse effect, make it more strenuous to consume high-gravity wines, incentivizing lighter, more refreshing choices.
In this context, several wineries in Campania are experimenting with and proposing a new approach. From the vineyard to the winery, work is done on agronomic techniques and winemaking that aim to achieve low alcohol content (maximum 12, 5 percent by volume), without sacrificing fragrance, freshness and territorial identity.
The word from Maria Paola Sorrentino
We asked Maria Paola Sorrentino, president of the Campania Tourism Movement, what are the consumption trends of those who come to the winery for a wine-related experience:
“If we look back, even by just a decade, the wine scene used to be dominated by a precise ideology: the more structured, powerful and high-gravity a wine was, the more it was considered valuable and worthy of attention.
Today in 2025, however, we are here talking about a silent but very powerful revolution: The rise of low-alcohol wines. It is not a fad, it is a cultural change. It is the answer to a new, hyper-informed consumer who seeks in the glass not an escape from reality, but a pleasurable experience that is Conscious, sustainable and integrated into one’s daily life. This is not simply a decrease in gradation; it is an evolution of the concept of luxury itself. Luxury is no longer just opulence, but well-being, control and authenticity. It is the pleasure of sharing a second bottle without qualms. It is the pursuit of the aromatic complexity that does not need alcoholic masks to express itself. And it is here that the technological and agronomic challenge gets more interesting. Lowering alcohol without depleting the soul of the wine requires mastery: early harvests, selected yeasts, cutting-edge winemaking techniques. We are facing a new frontier for the creativity of our producers.”
